What are the dates for the Premier League’s winter break? Understanding the schedules for AFCON and the Asia Cup.

In the modern football landscape, players are now participating in more matches in a single season than ever before. This was notably evident in the previous season’s congested schedule due to the winter World Cup, where a large number of domestic matches, ranging from league fixtures to cup competitions, were squeezed into a tightly packed timeframe.

Despite the provision of a 43-day mid-season break for the tournament in Qatar, numerous players, teams, and managers still voiced concerns about player burnout upon their return from the competition. With the implementation of new rules aimed at curbing time-wasting by Premier League referees, match durations have extended, and schedules have not been reduced.

While there are no major European competitions occurring this winter, two significant tournaments, the Asia Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations, are scheduled almost simultaneously. The Asia Cup will take place from January 12, 2024, to February 10, 2024, while the Africa Cup of Nations is set to run from January 13 to February 11.

Consequently, the Premier League is reintroducing the winter break, ensuring that players representing their countries in these tournaments do not miss any domestic action. This break will also offer a much-needed rest period for players not affected by these two competitions.

This marks the first time the winter break has been implemented in a season since its introduction in the 2019/20 season. Subsequent seasons have been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to a condensed schedule in the 2020/21 season, making the winter break less necessary.

The 2022 World Cup also created scheduling challenges for the Football Association (F.A.), which used the tournament as a natural break in the season, providing players with a rest period, despite 133 Premier League stars participating in the Qatar World Cup. While the winter break has been a regular feature in the Women’s Super League (WSL), the Premier League is adopting it for the first time this season.

The league will introduce the winter break from January 13 to January 21, 2024, with an assurance from the F.A. that no club will be scheduled to play two matches within a 48-hour period during this part of the season. The ten fixtures initially planned for the weekend of January 13 are subject to possible date changes. These matches will be distributed evenly across the two weekends, ensuring that each team in the league has an extended rest period before or after their matches.

The following are the ten matches currently scheduled for the weekend of January 13:

  • Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace
  • Bournemouth vs. Liverpool
  • Brentford vs. Nottingham Forest
  • Brighton vs. Wolves
  • Burnley vs. Luton Town
  • Chelsea vs. Fulham
  • Everton vs. Aston Villa
  • Manchester United vs. Tottenham
  • Newcastle United vs. Manchester City
  • Sheffield United vs. West Ham United

However, clubs may need to return earlier than anticipated if F.A. Cup matches are scheduled during that period. To accommodate the break, the F.A. has agreed to move the F.A. Cup fifth-round matches to midweek and eliminate replays for that stage of the competition, reducing the number of matches and prioritizing player well-being. Extra time and penalty shootouts will replace these replays.

The Premier League is scheduled to resume with midweek matches on January 30 and January 31, both Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with regular weekend fixtures returning on the weekend of February 3.
