“What Xabi Alonso is considering as Liverpool ‘reach out’ regarding potentially succeeding Klopp

“Liverpool have reached out to Xabi Alonso regarding the possibility of him becoming their new manager in the summer.

According to reports, Xabi Alonso remains content at Bayer Leverkusen and is determined to pursue the Bundesliga title, despite Liverpool reaching out to him about potentially succeeding Jurgen Klopp this summer. Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season in January, prompting the club to search for his replacement.

Since his appointment in October 2015, Klopp has achieved significant success with Liverpool, including winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup. The club’s quest for a new manager is in progress, with Alonso reportedly being a top candidate. Allegedly, there has already been communication between the Spaniard and his former club, as reported by Foot Mercato.

Reports suggest that Liverpool have approached Alonso regarding a potential return to Merseyside. However, Alonso appears content at Bayer Leverkusen for the time being, leading them in their pursuit of their first-ever Bundesliga title. Currently topping the table after 20 games, Leverkusen holds a narrow lead over Bayern Munich, whom they face this weekend.

Alonso previously distanced himself from speculation about becoming the next manager, stating last month: “I was surprised by Jurgen’s news. I have huge respect for Jurgen and Liverpool. At the moment I am really happy here and enjoying my work. Each day and game is a challenge. We are in an intense and beautiful journey here at Leverkusen.

“Speculation is a natural part of football, but I hold immense respect and admiration for what Jurgen has accomplished at Liverpool over the past nine years and the manner in which he achieved it. His bond with the fans and his outstanding work speak for themselves. However, my primary focus remains on Bayer Leverkusen.

He further expressed: “I am highly motivated to excel in my role here. I am very pleased with the team, the club, and everything surrounding it, so that remains my primary focus. I’m not looking ahead to May; my attention is on the present, preparing for our upcoming match against Gladbach and ensuring my players are prepared. However, I must admit, Jurgen’s departure from Liverpool did catch me off guard.
