Getafe Manager Clarifies the Reasoning Behind the Club’s Move to Acquire Mason Greenwood

The 21-year-old completed a loan transfer from Manchester United on September 1, with Getafe offering him the opportunity to rejuvenate his career in Spain’s top division.

Last month, Manchester United announced that Greenwood’s tenure at Old Trafford had come to an end, but it’s important to note that he still has two years remaining on his contract, and his contract was not terminated.

In January of the previous year, Greenwood was arrested under allegations of rape and assault, which were brought forward by a woman. Subsequently, he faced additional charges of sexual assault and threats to kill. Furthermore, he was accused of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm.

However, it is pertinent to mention that there are no longer any charges against him, which means he is now eligible to resume his professional football career.

Criticism has been directed at Getafe’s decision to sign Greenwood, given the sensitivity of the allegations. Nonetheless, Bordalas, Getafe’s manager, is confident that this move will be mutually beneficial.

“It’s an extremely sensitive matter, and we shouldn’t trivialize it. Everyone is aware of what transpired, and the appropriate actions were taken. However, we can only discuss football,” he stated to reporters.

“As for the other aspects, I believe that both the public and the relevant authorities did what was necessary, and it concluded without a conviction. Hence, he is now a free individual, a highly skilled footballer who joins Getafe with tremendous enthusiasm, and we will certainly support him in his quest to regain his peak form.”

“I’ve already commented on what I needed to. I can only address football matters. We are all aware of his potential. He’s still a very young individual at 21, and we can assist him in adapting to this new environment. It’s a different league, but considering his potential, if he achieves the necessary physical condition, I have complete faith in him due to his youth. We’ve also been informed that he is eager to restore his professional status, and Getafe can play a role in helping him with that.”

Greenwood reportedly harbors hopes that a successful loan spell at Getafe could potentially pave the way for his return to Manchester United in the future.

Serie A side Lazio also made an attempt to acquire the forward on the transfer deadline day, with the club’s president, Claudio Lotito, blaming Manchester United for the deal’s failure.

At this point, it remains uncertain when Greenwood will be available for selection, as the striker has not been in a competitive environment since January 2022.
