Manchester City secured a convincing 3-0 win against arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, maintaining their recent dominance.

Manchester City closed the gap to the Premier League (PL) summit to just two points with a commanding 3-0 triumph over arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, asserting their recent dominance in the fixture with a fifth victory in the last six head-to-head meetings.

Coming off an emotionally charged UEFA Champions League win over Copenhagen midweek, Old Trafford paid another poignant tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton before kickoff. The hosts, initiating the 191st edition of the Manchester derby, began energetically. Scott McTominay aimed to extend his goal-scoring form with an early attempt saved by Ederson. Simultaneously, André Onana showcased acrobatics to deny Phil Foden and recover in time to parry away a loose ball from Erling Haaland.

After a closely contested opening 20 minutes, the visitors gradually took command, and their improved play bore fruit before the half-hour mark. Ramsus Højlund’s foul on Rodri inside the area resulted in a penalty, confidently converted by Haaland, City’s star striker, for his 10th PL goal of the season. The match continued at a frantic pace until halftime, with Ederson superbly thwarting McTominay’s fierce strike, and Onana denying Haaland a second with a flying save.

Carrying their momentum into the early stages of the second half, City, having failed to double their tally before the break, saw Haaland find the net in the 49th minute, heading home from Bernardo Silva’s precisely delivered ball to increase City’s lead. This goal deflated the hosts, who, facing a two-goal deficit, struggled to trouble Pep Guardiola’s side as the match progressed into the final half-hour.

Despite City’s dominance in a superb second-half display, United came close to pulling a goal back with 20 minutes remaining when Marcus Rashford missed the target from inside the box. Seizing the opportunity, the visitors added a late third through Phil Foden after unselfish play from Haaland, securing three well-deserved points. The result levels City with Arsenal in second place as they continue their pursuit of a fourth consecutive PL title. Meanwhile, United, having lost five of their opening 10 PL games, will be eager to bounce back against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup in midweek.
