Newcastle eliminates Manchester City from the League Cup

Manchester City’s journey in the League Cup came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Wednesday. Alexander Isak netted the sole goal at St. James’ Park in the 50th minute, advancing last season’s finalists to the round of 16.

Despite securing a treble last season by winning the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup, City’s hopes of achieving an unprecedented quadruple were dashed. Pep Guardiola, the City coach, made eight changes to the team that defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Saturday, and they missed the offensive prowess of Erling Haaland, who remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

Eddie Howe also made several changes following his team’s 8-0 victory over Sheffield United over the weekend. However, it wasn’t until the Newcastle manager introduced Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes at half-time that the home team took command of the match.

Isak was presented with the straightforward opportunity to score at the far post following a surge by Joelinton that created a gap in the City defense.”
