The game was tied at 1-1 during half-time when the players decided not to return for the second half upon hearing of the incident. Over an hour later, the match was officially abandoned, and the fans were safely evacuated from the stadium later that night. The attack resulted in the tragic death of two Swedish nationals on Monday evening. This incident occurred around 45 minutes prior to kick-off and about three miles from the stadium. Authorities are treating it as an act of terrorism, and the perpetrator was later shot dead by the police in Brussels.

The Sweden national team has released a statement on their official social media accounts, expressing their profound sadness for the loss of the two fans. They extended their thoughts to the families of the victims and the fans who were present at the stadium during the incident, commending their calmness and cooperation in following safety instructions.

Anthony Elanga shared this statement on his Instagram story, along with praying hands and blue and yellow heart emojis. Elanga was among the substitutes for the match.
