AC Milan: Olivier Giroud Steps into Goal and Executes Crucial Save Following Goalkeeper’s Red Card

Olivier Giroud, known for his remarkable goal-scoring prowess, found himself in an unfamiliar role during AC Milan’s Serie A match against Genoa on Saturday night. The striker had to step into the goalkeeper position after AC Milan’s regular goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, received a red card for a dangerous challenge. Surprisingly, Giroud made a crucial save that secured Milan’s 1-0 victory.

AC Milan entered the game aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A table. They had enjoyed a strong start to the season, with six wins and just one loss, which had come against their city rivals, Inter Milan. A victory against Genoa would help them maintain their lead over second-placed Inter.

For most of the match, it appeared that a goalless draw might be the outcome, as neither team could break the deadlock. However, in the 87th minute, Christian Pulisic scored a decisive goal for Milan with a clinical finish inside the box, marking his fourth goal of the season and showing his adaptation to his new club, following his move from Chelsea.

Then, a series of dramatic events unfolded. Genoa attempted to get back into the game with a long ball over the top, forcing Milan’s goalkeeper Maignan to come out and clear the ball. However, his clearance was deemed dangerous, as he collided with an opponent. Following a VAR review, Maignan was shown a red card in the 98th minute, and Giroud had to assume the role of goalkeeper.

Milan nearly conceded from the resulting free-kick, as Albert Gudmunsson’s shot hit the wall and bounced dangerously, but the crossbar saved Milan before the ball was cleared away for a corner.

More drama ensued as Genoa’s goalkeeper, Josep Martinez, was also sent off in injury time for a challenge on Yunus Musah. With both teams down to 10 players and outfield players forced to play as goalkeepers, Genoa had an opportunity to salvage a late point.

In the final moments, the ball was played through to George Puscas, who entered the penalty area and unleashed a shot towards the goal. However, Giroud reacted swiftly, making a remarkable save by smothering the ball before securing it, ensuring that Milan secured all three points.

Giroud’s impressive reflexes in this unexpected role showcased his versatility, prompting thoughts of how he might have fared as a goalkeeper in another life, alongside his stints as a striker for Arsenal, Chelsea, and the French national team.
