Rodrygo Goes expresses his frustration with his position as a number nine at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo Goes has discussed his mixed start to the season in the Spanish capital. The club has undergone significant changes, particularly in their attack, with Karim Benzema’s departure to Saudi Arabia necessitating a reshuffle.

Carlo Ancelotti initially intended to retain Benzema, but when plans changed, they brought in Joselu as a temporary solution. Additionally, Jude Bellingham’s impressive early form has lightened the goal-scoring load for Ancelotti’s forwards, prompting changes in both the midfield and attack.

The shift to a midfield diamond system has led to a two-player attacking partnership, with Rodrygo having started seven out of nine La Liga matches in the 2023/24 season and none of the two Champions League matches. Unfortunately, the 22-year-old has only managed to score one goal in La Liga this season, and he confessed that his new role as a forward has posed challenges for him when it comes to scoring.

“I have always emphasized my ability to play on the wing. I don’t enjoy playing as a No.9, but at Real Madrid, I’m required to do so. When I play for Brazil, I have more freedom to roam,” he explained, as reported by Marca.
