Security measures at Wembley for the Euro Qualifier between England and Italy have been increased following a terrorist attack in Brussels.

The terrorist attack in Brussels on Monday evening led to the abandonment of Belgium’s Euro 2024 Qualifier against Sweden at half-time.

Two Swedish nationals lost their lives in the attack, and the suspected gunman, after being shot by armed officers, has since died at the hospital. Both sets of fans were confined to the stadium while authorities searched for the attacker.

Belgian police raised the terror alert to its highest level, expressing concerns about the possibility of additional accomplices. The Metropolitan Police has assured a “robust policing plan” for Tuesday’s game between England and Italy, with a visible police presence. Superintendent Gerry Parker, the match commander, emphasized the preparedness to handle large-scale events and respond promptly to emerging incidents.

Security measures were already anticipated for Tuesday night, with increased police and FA security officials at Wembley. The decision not to illuminate the Wembley arch in support of Israeli victims, along with the incidents in Belgium, contributed to heightened security awareness.

A moment of silence was observed at all Euro 2024 qualifier matches on Tuesday night to honor the two victims of the terrorist attack in Brussels. This incident marked the second terrorist attack in Europe within four days, following the murder of a teacher in France on the preceding Friday.
