West Ham sets a new European record spanning 55 years with their victory over Freiburg in the Europa League.

West Ham has achieved a historic milestone by setting a new record for the longest unbeaten streak in European competition for an English club. The Irons secured a 2-1 victory against Freiburg on Thursday evening, extending their unbeaten run to 17 games across both the Europa Conference League and Europa League.

In the match, Lucas Paqueta opened the scoring early for West Ham in Germany, only for Roland Sallai to equalize for the home team shortly after halftime. Nayef Aguerd later headed in the winning goal. Unfortunately, West Ham’s fans couldn’t celebrate the win or the record in person due to a UEFA ban stemming from incidents during last season’s Conference League final triumph in Prague.

This remarkable unbeaten run began in August 2022, with David Moyes’ team emerging victorious in 16 of those 17 fixtures. The previous record had stood since 1968, initially set by Don Revie’s Leeds United and later matched by Bill Nicholson’s Tottenham in 1972.

Manchester City is also on an impressive 16-game unbeaten streak in Europe following their 3-1 win against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Speaking post-match, Moyes acknowledged the legends of Revie and Nicholson and pointed out that the competition landscape has evolved since their time.

West Ham currently leads Europa League Group A after two rounds and will face Olympiacos in their next fixture on October 28th.
